The Millennium

The focal point of all human history has been and will always be the glorious Second Coming of Christ and His millennial reign. When He at last comes again he will take His place as Lord of Lords and King of Kings, and will rule upon the earth in peace and righteous for a thousand years. Just prior to the return of The King, the Saints will have gathered into the Safety of Zion, and the millennial blessings will have begun among them prior to the Second Coming. (Moses 7:62; D&C 42:9; 45:66-70; 124:9-11; Ether 13:5-6)

“And righteousness will I send down out of heaven; and truth will I send forth out of the earth, to bear testimony of mine Only Begotten; his resurrection from the dead; yea, and also the resurrection of all men; and righteousness and truth will I cause to sweep the earth as with a flood, to gather out mine elect from the four quarters of the earth, unto a place which I shall prepare, an Holy City, that my people may gird up their loins, and be looking forth for the time of my coming; for there shall be my tabernacle, and it shall be called Zion, a New Jerusalem.” (Moses 7:62)

After Christ has resurrected both the Celestial and the Terrestrial dead and lifted mortals of a like worthiness up into the clouds to meet Him, the earth will be cleansed by fire. Every corruptible thing will be consumed. (D&C 101:24) All the proud and they that do wickedly shall be burned as stubble. (Malachi 4:1; D&C 29:9; 74:23-25; 133:68-74)

The earth will be quickly renewed from the cleansing by fire. (Tenth Article of Faith) The earth will evolve into a paradise. There will be a new heaven and a new earth. (Isaiah 65:17) The earth will be transfigured. (D&C 63:20-21) The land masses of the earth shall have been moved back into their original position as they were shortly after the day of creation. There will no longer be mountains and valleys. (D&C 133:22-24) All things will become new. (D&C 101:25)

“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to bein all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein welleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.” (2 Peter 3:10-14)

Satan will be bound and no longer have power to tempt mankind. (D&C 101:28) This will in part be because all telestial mankind will have been incinerated by His coming. (Malachi 3-4; D&C 29:9) But, it will also be because righteous will sweep the earth, Satan will be bound, and men will no longer hear the voice of evil for 1000 years.

There will peace throughout the earth largely because the enmity of man shall cease. (D&C 101:26) Mankind will “beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nations shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.” (Isaiah 2:4; Micah 4:3; 2 Nephi 12:4)

The enmity of animals and of all flesh shall cease. (D&C 101:26) Animals shall live together in peace.

“The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall at straw like the ox. And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’ den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea. (Isaiah 11:6-9)

Death, sorrow and disease shall end. Mortal bodies will be changed to a “millennial” condition (my term) and live to the “age of a tree” and then are “changed in the twinkling of an eye” into a resurrected state and “shall be caught up, and his rest shall be glorious.” (D&C 101:29-31; 63:50-51)

All things will be restored and revealed which “God hath spoke by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began” (Acts 3:21, 2 Nephi 30:15-18) There shall be great advances in knowledge and truth. (D&C 101:32-34)

There will be millions of good people who have yet to embrace the latter-day Church. Missionary work will resume with power until all are gathered in. (Micah 4:5) “The earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.” (Isaiah 11:0; Habakkuk. 2:14; D&C 84:19-20) All people shall “know the Lord, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity and I will remember their sin no more.” (Jeremiah 31:34)

The Lord will “make and end of all nations” (D&C 87:6), and He shall reign “whose right it is to reign”. To Jesus Christ “there shall be given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him.” (Daniel 7:13-14). There shall be “no laws but my laws when I come, for I am your lawgiver,” (D&C 38:22). “For the Lord shall be in their midst, and his glory shall be upon them, and he will be their king and their lawgiver.” (D&C 45:59)

There will be two great world capitals, Zion, the New Jerusalem, and Old Jerusalem. The law, or the political power of Kings and Queens shall issue forth from Zion, and the “word of the Lord” from Jerusalem.” (Isaiah 2:3) “We shall reign on the earth.” (Revelation 5:10; 20:4) “Christ and the resurrected saints will reign over the earth during the thousand years. (Teachings, p. 268)

Temple work will be completed for all worthy mankind. (Doctrines of Salvation, Vol. 2, pp. 251-252)

(Condensed from McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, pp. 492-501)

As I have contemplated this grand millennial era, I am overwhelmed by how little words can convey of the glories of the millennial day. The scriptures paint a glorious picture, but to actually be there, to be among those who never die, who never hunger or thirst, whose tears never fall any more, whose children grow up without sin unto salvation, who labor all of every day in the name of the Lord, whose voices can move mountains and raise the dead – those will be the day of days!

In the great library of the tomes chronicling the history of God’s children that will adorn the libraries of eternity and proclaim the works of men and God, this great millennial day will fill rooms with its volumes, and all of the remainder of the days of the earth but one book.

Of even greater splendor is that if we rise to our privilege and build Zion in this day, then we will be the ones who live to enact the greatest days of human history on this planet or any other, and it will be our names that appear on the title page and chapters of eternal history. So great will be those days that former days will not even be remembered any more, nor will they come to mind. (Isaiah 65:17)

I have a question. There are so many desolations. Unless you attain unto righteousness, and claim your place in Zion, you will have to endure such attrocities. It seems that there will still be millions of people who will have endured all of the trials who were not in Zion. I have no source, but I thought there would be people of other faiths who had been living a terrestrial law, and some members as well. Is this correct?

I also have an observation. How glorious would it be to preach the gospel in the millenium? After serving a mission, and having to deal with mostly telestial people, knowing that you are going to people who have survived being brought into a terrestrial sphere would be much more enjoyable.

One more question. With Christ reigning on the earth, is there really a chance that any of these people will reject His gospel?

    • Wow, those are three big questions.

First, yes many people will survive the tribulations and make their physical way to Zion. It is that process of getting to Zion, being led by God, experiencing the miracles and being stripped of dependence upon telestial things to survive, that ultimately makes people worthy to be taught and enter Zion after they arrive. This is a huge subject which is covered in my next book coming out. (Still no definitive name though for the book.)

Second Question. I think the missionary work during the pre-millennial stages with the 144,000 will be the most glorious ever undertaken. Miracles will be openly manifest. The deliverance and power of God will be plainly shown. The missionaries will have power like Moses to deliver the people, and yet the world will war against them. It would make a great “Super Hero” movie there towards the end. Many super heroes and many super villains with God directing the final battle.

Last Question. At the end of the day, agency is still the greatest power in mortality. As long as people exist some will choose to not believe. It is my understanding that after the millennial day 99.999% of all mortals will have come to Christ, but that there will be a few whose traditions and beliefs will keep them from fully embracing Christ. They will know He exists, that he rules the world, that he is good and benevolent, but they will not accept Him as their Savior. But, by the judgment day, every knee will bow. It is hard to imagine, but it is what the scriptures teach.

      Thanks for the questions.

There will be a great and glorious conference center in the City of New Jerusalem where tens of thousands will be in attendace at each and every conference. A great and glorious throne where the Savior will sit and preside. Resurrected beings will attend along with the terrestrial mortal saints. It will be wonderful indeed. I bear testimony that these things are true. In Jesus’ name, amen.
